The New “Woo-woo” Therapy
Have you seen the influx of new age shops lately? How about metaphysical things like astrology, crystals and tarot cards? What zodiac sign are you? While these tools and concepts have been around for a long time, it has become more socially acceptable to “be about it” these days. Which is fantastic! I fully embrace “the woo”, especially in my therapy work. Humans are infinitely complex creatures, so a century of predominantly old, upperclass, white male text book jargon needs to make way for the new woo-woo therapy.
As psychotherapy becomes more open and honest, and more inclusive of diversity, people create their own healing in their lives by embracing the things that work for them. For me, this means gathering my closest girlfriends, grabbing a handful of fruit rolls (and whatever candy we can get our hands on) and busting out our favorite crystals and tarot cards to try and discern the meaning of the latest dreams we’ve had.
We create our own meaning to our lives by gathering together all of what makes us happy and whole. To some this may be prayers to a higher power, or spontaneous art thrown on a canvas, a long hike in the woods to reconnect with Mother Nature…
At the end of the day, we have to put our heads down and sleep knowing we did our best to make our lives what we want them to be. As a therapist and social worker, I am doing just that: incorporating new age and metaphysical concepts into evidence-based practices, for an all-around holistic approach to healing mental health.
I am excited for this new journey into authenticity and genuine meaning. 🙂
