FAQs
What do you really do?
Our work together is based in traditional talk therapy, however we work with the body as well, to reconnect the parts that have been lost to anxiety and trauma. Through gentle stretching and breathwork, we can slowly reclaim your connection with your mind and body.
What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?
There is no conflict at all between talking with your loved ones and talking to a mental health professional. Sometimes though, you need an unbiased view to help sort out some ideas. Other times you may be having issues that are sensitive and need support from a safe, caring, non-judgemental person. In addition to that, a licensed mental health professional has specific training to help you learn the tools and skills you need to grow as a person. A skilled professional will also empower you to achieve your goals and dreams.
Is therapy confidential?
Absolutely. Everything you say here stays here, with the only exceptions being if you were to hurt yourself or someone else, or if you were to disclose the abuse or neglect of a child or elder. If you would like our sessions to be shared with an outside party, we discuss that in our sessions ahead of time to make sure the proper forms are filled out and the right people are on the right page.
Why shouldn’t I just take medication?
Medication is designed to support you on a neurobiological level. The molecules in the medication work with the cells in our brains to create a more balanced hormone cycle. Somatic psychotherapy helps you learn how to cultivate the connection between the mind and body and understand how your brain and body work together.
How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?
Therapy in general is tailored to your specific needs and desires. Our first few sessions are typically more straightforward: gathering useful information and getting backgrounds together. After a few sessions, we have usually identified the more prominent themes and will begin to work towards addressing your concerns. Whether we are working on decreasing anxiety or building up self-esteem, our time time together is always fun and fruitful.
I’m going on vacation. We can still meet for sessions, right?
Depending on where you are traveling we may or may not be able to meet. I am licensed to practice clinical psychotherapy within the borders of New Jersey.
How long will it take?
Depending on what you are looking to address, therapy can last anywhere from a few months to several years. It’s normal for therapy to ebb and flow and to take time, especially if we are working with complex trauma and sensitive issues. Most importantly, good therapy needs to be safe, and if it isn’t slow, it isn’t safe. Good trauma therapy is always safe and slow.
I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?
The most important part of therapy is showing up. Simply being there and willing to be seen and be heard is enough to get your started on your journey to wellness.
